Running Math Insight |
| |
- PC: With the CD in the drive, go to the Windows Start menu. Select Programs and locate Math Insight. Select Math Insight.
Macintosh: Double-click on the alias created on your desktop.
- The Math Insight splash screen will appear. You can maximize the window, if you wish.
- Click on the splash screen. A dialog will appear asking you to Open a New Problem, Open Saved Work, or Use Tools.
- Select Open New Problem. Math Insight presents you with a list of problems. We suggest you begin with Snax 'n' Soda.
- When a problem is first opened, only two of the seven icons at the left side of the screen are active: Learn about the problem, and Restate the problem. Unless you have already seen the opening video (which a teacher might have shown to the class before the students use the computer software), choose Learn about the problem. You may need to adjust the volume on your speakers to hear the audio track.
- The seven icons at the left represent problem-solving steps. A mouse-over on the icons will reveal their titles. You must go to Restate the problem, and after that you may investigate the remaining steps (Gather Information, Use Tools and Solve, Write Your Response, Check Your Work, and Extend Your Work).

- Information related to the problem, such as Mrs. Grimspoon's letter in the Snax problem, is located in the Gather Information step. There are also questions that can be asked of the characters by clicking on a question and then clicking the name of one of the characters.
- Try clicking the arrows on the right-corners of the "panes" and you will see these arrows allow you to move the "panes" up/down and side to side (except in Restate the Problem.
- In Use tools and solve - By moving the "Strategy and Notes" pane down with the arrows, notice that you can view two tools simultaneously on the left and right "panes" of Math Insight.
- The link buttons only appear for tools that can link.
- If you open and use a spreadsheet, be aware that the spreadsheet commands (such as fill-down) can be found with a right-mouse click or through the Spreadsheet menu in the menu bar.

- PC: If you choose to save your work, the "save" function from the "File" menu defaults to the A: drive (floppy drive). If you do not have a floppy inserted, a dialog will appear stating "A:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready." Either insert a floppy and retry, or click the cancel button to select an alternative location.
Macintosh: The standard Mac dialogue will appear. Choose a location to save work.
- You can open a new problem by choosing "File" and "Open problem" or close the program by choosing "File" and "Exit."

Accessing student work |
| |
It is recommended that students to save their work with a file-naming convention that identifies them by their name and by the problem they are working on. (For example, student John Smith saves his work on Cool to Carpool by naming his file "JohnSmith_Cool".) You will need to choose the method of saving student work that works for you. For example, some teachers prefer to have students save their work on floppy disks and others have them save in a particular location on a file server.
Note that you (and your students) do not need to put a file extension on saved work. Math Insight saves these files as "xml" files by default.
To open a student's work, open the Math Insight application from your hard drive. At the "Select" dialog box that displays after the splash screen, click "Open Saved Work," then locate the file using the standard procedure for locating and opening files.
You can then examine the work online and/or print it out to examine it. |

Known Issues |
| |
- You may need to see section 3 of the Teacher's Guide for help using some of the tools.
- QuickTime version 5.0.2 is on your Math Insight CD. If you upgrade QuickTime in the future, make sure you also install the latest version of QuickTime for Java.
- Splash screens may not display properly under MAC OS X.
- In Math Insight Help, using the Search function causes Math Insight to crash. Do not use the search function in Math Insight Help. (The Search function is the tab with the magnifying glass icon.)
Please report any other issues to mathinsight-support@sri.com. |
